Protection of endangered and red-listed native species in Preah Monivong Bokor National Park, Cambodia

Donor: Franklinia fundation, Year of implementation: 2024-2027

The presented project targets the conservation of selected endangered tree species occurring in Preah Monivong National Park in Cambodia. Eight selected species are endangered by various threats. Despite being in National Park, the forests in the region are under constant threat of deforestation and the building of dams. Some of the species are subject of direct logging or wood harvesting, other for the valuable resin known as agarwood. Exploitation is driven by corruption in political systems and crime syndicates, who can target valuable trees for harvest through the guise of land development. The main project objectives include

i) Baseline inventory of selected tree species in the Monivong National Park,

ii) Conservation measures and increasing resilience

iii) Community involvement, capacity building and awareness.

This will be realised by proper conservation status evaluation, cultivation in home-gardens, re-plantation from wild source populations, establishment of nurseries capacity building of local stakeholders, with emphasis on local communities and conservation agencies.
